If your family had a station wagon, you know exactly what the way-back seat was.
It was the seat in the very back, facing backwards, where the kids rode looking at the road behind them. No seatbelts to speak of, no air conditioning back there, just a vinyl bench and a window that showed you where you’d already been.
And we loved it. We waved at the drivers behind us. We made faces. We pretended we were in charge of the whole road, even though we were literally facing the wrong way.
Parents called it the way-back. We called it the best seat in the car.
Did you ride in the way-back, or were you stuck in the middle seat up front with everybody else?
