The Morning After, and the Coffee Tastes Better

I’m going to say this right up top so nobody’s confused about where this tab stands: I’m a Democrat. Always have been. And last night, I went to bed happy.

Election nights in this house are a whole production — TV on, phone buzzing, me doing math I have no business doing while the results crawl in. Gen X grew up watching returns on three channels with a guy and a map, and honestly, part of me still expects that. What I didn’t expect, after all these years, was to wake up the morning after a midterm feeling this good about where voters landed.

Here’s what last night said to me: people showed up. Midterms are where good intentions usually go to die — everybody’s fired up for the presidential years and then life gets in the way. Not this time. This time the lines were real, the turnout was real, and the message was real. You don’t have to take my word for it — just look at the map this morning. It looks a whole lot better in blue than the alternative.

I’m not going to pretend one election fixes everything. I’ve been voting since the early 90s; I’ve had mornings after that felt like a funeral. That’s exactly why I’m not going to be cool about this one. Wins like this are built out of ordinary people deciding their Tuesday mattered. Last night, they decided it did.

Democracy isn’t a spectator sport, and last night the crowd got on the field. I’ll take it — and I’ll see everybody at the next one.

How did YOU watch it last night — and be honest, what time did you finally turn the TV off?
