Welcome to My Two Cents, the tab where I complain about things that have been bothering me for fifty years. First up: we all just did the clock dance again on Sunday, and I’d like to know who, exactly, is still asking for this.
We “fell back” this weekend. Sounds cozy. In reality it means it’s now pitch dark before dinner, my body thinks it’s midnight at 7 PM, and somewhere in this house there is a microwave clock that will be wrong until roughly March, at which point it will be wrong in the other direction.
And for what? The reasons are antiques. Save energy — from the era of candlelight. Help the farmers — the farmers hate it, ask any of them. It’s got momentum, that’s all. Twice a year, an entire country gives itself jet lag without the vacation, loses an hour or gains an hour, and spends a week walking around like the floor moved. Kids are wrecked, dogs are confused, and I am a man in my fifties who has changed the clock in his car twice a year since the Reagan administration and I am DONE being polite about it.
Pick one. Daylight time forever, standard time forever — I genuinely don’t care which. I’ll adapt in a week, like a houseplant. Just stop moving the sun around twice a year and calling it a system.
That’s my two cents. Which way would YOU pick — permanent daylight time, permanent standard time, or are you somehow a fan of the switch?
